I wanted to use my old HP laser-jet 4L printer with my iMac (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.6.4). First remove the 25 pin cable from the printer by removing the access panel on the rear of the printer and un plugging the 36 pin connector.
Close out and you are ready to print. Turn on printer.
Plug in the new cable to the printer and usb into the iMac. Select the + sign and the HP laser-jet 4L driver will load.
It took me longer to un package the cable than to install it and become operational. This cable works.
Go to system preference, hardware, printer / fax.
The cord is just the right length too, and it appears to be durable. I'm very satisfied with this product. This took a total of about 3 minutes. The drivers were then installed automatically, and the printer was immediately added to my laptop as approved hardware. The cord worked so well. I have an HP Deskjet 932C printer which is about 10 years old, and I have a Dell Inspiron 5 laptop with Windows 7 which is less than a year old. I plugged it in, and my Dell laptop immediately downloaded the drivers without having to insert the CD that was provided. I tried to print something and it worked the very first time.
Both operating systems recognize the adapter and try to use it, but when they send stuff to the printer it just simply does not do anything. This product, unfortunately, only succeeds at the easy trick. Well I'm not sure if the cable or the printer is really to blame here, but I have definitively determined that this adapter will not allow my HP LaserJet 2100 to function in either Windows XP or Linux. Both operating systems confirm through queue managers that they have indeed sent stuff through the cable, but in the end there is nothing. This proves that it is one thing to make a cable with a USB plug on one end and a parallel plug on the other; but it is quite another trick entirely to make a parallel printer deal with information sent via USB.
Luckily, I found just what I needed for $1 plus postage. I had an old printer that I wanted to connect to a new computer and could not find a cable with the proper adapters at any retail store. Saved me from having to discard a perfectly good LaserJet Printer and buying a new one.
Printer drivers are loaded, but never could get the cable to work. Gave up in frustration. Well installation is certainly easy, just plug it in. Never could print anything.
